The Brass Ring: A Forever Love Story

In tournaments of olden days, knights on horses thundered across churned earth, lance poised, reaching for the brass ring. This was the prize. For Cliff, his marriage to Eve was the brass ring. She made him propose twice, knowing she would only marry once. They shared a special song: “There’s a long, long trail a-winding, until our dreams all come true; ‘til the day that I’ll be walking down that long, long trail with you.” Dad’s voice soared as he gazed at Mom, singing for her alone. Their marriage was the dream, not fame or riches.

Dad valued Eve as a smart, capable woman. Mom knew that he would allow her the freedom she needed to be herself. They waltzed beautifully together on the dance floor and through life. When Dad lost his professor job he was forced into early retirement. Mom continued working as a computer manager, Dad helped at home, and times were rough. But each evening they walked together, hand in hand, around the lagoon. Their steps matched after years of walking together, thinking together, loving together.

When Eve died, Cliff held her body. Finally, sadly, he kissed Eve one last time and released her. Two years later, Dad passed away and was buried at the same country church. When his casket was lowered into the ground, it shifted unexpectedly and tilted toward hers. Even in death, it seems, he sought Eve…his brass ring.

Fantastic piece of flash fiction there, Jenny. It's not often that I read something and wish that I had written it, but this is one of those times. Truly wonderful writing!
